Medicine
In the health field of public health and medicine, the Foundation's objective is to encourage projects that promote the advancement of medical sciences and the quality of care offered to patients by hospitals.
One of its foremost projects began in the early 1970s with the birth of the School of Cytology at Hôtel-Dieu Hospital in Montréal (CHUM). The Foundation was the sole sponsor of the construction of premises adapted to the school's special needs and provided ongoing support for the acquisition of state-of-the-art scientific instruments, including electron and photo microscopes for intra-hospital transmission, instruments that have made a concrete contribution to the screening and prevention of cervical cancer and the diagnosis of breast cancer. The school has supplied the hospital network with several hundred cytotechnologists who are providing a crucial service for the fight against cancer. Over the years, the foundation has facilitated the purchase of research instruments in pneumology, cellular immunology, microsurgery, nuclear medicine and pediatric cardiology. It has also equipped three Quebec hospitals,- Hôtel-Dieu de Montréal, Hôpital Notre-Dame both part of (CHUM) and Hôpital de l'Enfant-Jésus in Quebec City (CHUL), with CT scanners. Among the many other projects, the establishment of a vast computer facility for biomedical research at McGill University, and the layout of the building that houses the nutrition department of the Université de Montréal at the Liliane de Stewart Pavilion. |
