The Stewart Program for Modern Design

In 1979, with the donation of the Design Collection to the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts, Mrs. Stewart pursued her interests in collecting modern design by establishing the Stewart Program for Modern Design, as a companion program to that of the MMFA. Collecting, research, exhibitions, symposia, conferences, websites, and publications would continue. Special attention was focused on maintaining relationships with designers, manufacturers, and the education sector.

The travelling international exhibition Partners in Design: Alfred H. Barr and Phillip Johnson was produced under this program and shown among other venues at the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts. An interactive website, supported by the Canada Virtual Museum program, dedicated to this exhibition www.partnersindesign.org integrates technologies to inform the public about design and to answer the question: What is good design? It also features an interactive map of 100 design sites in Canada and over 150 objects from the Stewart Collection. American Streamline Design: The World of Tomorrow was another travelling exhibition organized by the program and also presented at the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts.  The Collector's Eye: Georges R. Kravis II is one of a series of small exhibitions organized by the program held at the Forget house.

The website Designed by Women is currently in production by the Stewart Program - it focuses on the creations of women around the world. Through images, biographies, interviews, videos, essays and comparative studies, Designed by Women, will provide insight into the careers of these designers and highlights their observations of the profession. The site will continually be expanded to become a leading resource for the work of women designers.

Over the years, the Stewart Program has also published books including  American Streamlined Design: The World of Tomorrow (The Streamline from 1930 to the Present), Flammarion Edition 2005, A =The Century of Modern Design: A Selection of Objects from the Liliane and David M. Stewart Collection, Flammarion Edition 2010, Partners in Design: Alfred H. Barr and Philip Johnson, Monacelli Press 2015
